Terms of use
The rules for using rentedhere
Version 2026-10-24 · Last updated
This is the agreement between you and rentedhere when you read, post or message on the website or in the app. The content policy and the privacy policy are part of it.
Who may use rentedhere
- Anyone may read rentedhere. To post, message or keep an account you must be 18 or older and able to enter a contract under Indian law.
- One account per person, logged in with a mobile number that is yours. Don't open accounts for other people, or a second one for yourself.
- “rentedhere”, “we” and “us” mean the people who run the site and the app. “You” means anyone using them.
Your account and handle
- You log in with a six-digit code sent to your mobile number. There is no password.
- We give you a four-character handle (like 4F2K). It is how you appear on rentedhere. Your name and number never appear.
- If you own or run a home and claim it, you also post as an owner handle (like Owner M3). It shows “not verified yet” until a moderator has checked a document in your name against the home.
- What is posted from your account is your responsibility. If someone else gets into it, or the number is no longer yours, change the number in Settings or tell the grievance officer.
What you may post
- A record of a home you rented yourself: the deposit, the rent, the dates, repairs, how the owner or PG operator dealt with you, the water, the society. Only your own tenancy, one record for each stay.
- Listings for flats, PG beds and rooms that you own, run, or have the owner's go-ahead to let.
- Room and flatmate posts, “looking” posts, comments, answers to questions, and messages.
- All of it must follow the content policy: facts, in your own words, about people only as handles.
What stays yours, and what you let us do with it
- You keep the rights in what you write and in the photos you take.
- By posting, you give rentedhere a free, non-exclusive licence, anywhere in the world, to store, copy, resize, format, show and share it: on the site, in the app, in shared links and in share pictures, for as long as it is on rentedhere. We also use it in the counts and averages shown for a home, a society or a locality.
- A published review stays on its home's page after you delete your account (see Leaving rentedhere), so the licence for it carries on while it is shown.
- You confirm that you have the right to post what you post, and that the photos are yours to share.
What you must not post
These are not allowed anywhere on rentedhere: in reviews, listings, posts, profiles, comments or messages. The content policy explains them with examples.
- Anything that belongs to someone else and that you have no right to share.
- Anything obscene or pornographic, anything sexual involving a child, or anything that invades a person's privacy, including their bodily privacy.
- Anything that insults or harasses a person because of their gender, or that is objectionable because of race, caste, religion or community.
- Anything harmful to children.
- Anything that encourages money laundering or gambling, including real-money online games, or ads for them, that the law doesn't permit.
- Anything that infringes a copyright, trademark, patent or other such right.
- Anything you know to be false or misleading, anything posted to mislead or harass someone, and photos made or altered (by AI or otherwise) and passed off as real.
- Pretending to be another person.
- Anything that threatens the unity, integrity, defence, security or sovereignty of India, its relations with other countries, or public order; anything that incites an offence, gets in the way of investigating one, or insults another nation.
- Viruses or any code meant to damage or interfere with a computer or with rentedhere.
- Anything else that breaks Indian law.
- And on rentedhere in particular: names, phone numbers, emails, addresses or photos of people; anyone's caste, religion or community; brokers posting as owners; asking for money before a visit; reviews written for payment or a favour.
rentedhere is not a broker, and doesn't guarantee listings
- We don't arrange visits, negotiate, collect rent, deposits or tokens, or charge a fee or commission. A deal is between you and the person who posted.
- We don't check that a listing is accurate, that it is still available, or that the rent and deposit are what you'll be asked for. An owner's “verified” mark means only that a moderator checked a document in their name against the home.
- Visit before you pay anything. Never pay a token or an advance to someone you haven't met at the home.
The record is tenants' accounts, not our statements
- A review is one tenant's own account of their own tenancy. rentedhere doesn't write reviews, and doesn't check or endorse every fact in them.
- Ratings, deposit figures and averages on a page are worked out from those accounts. They are not our judgement of any owner, home or society.
- We keep the record because someone about to pay a deposit is better off knowing how earlier tenancies went.
- “Phone verified” means the account logged in with a code sent to a mobile number. “Verified tenancy” means a moderator saw a document showing that tenancy. Neither means we vouch for what the review says. How verification works.
- Owners can reply under any review as their owner handle.
- Know your rights is general information, not legal advice.
Messages
- A conversation is between the two people in it. A moderator reads it only when one of you reports it.
- Your number is shared only if you switch on “share my number” in that conversation, and then only with that person.
- Don't use messages to harass anyone, to ask for money before a visit, or to send anything this page or the content policy doesn't allow.
Takedowns, pauses and closing accounts
- Automatic checks refuse phone numbers, emails and links in public text, and hold some text (abusive words, mentions of caste or religion) until a moderator has read it.
- A moderator may hold, refuse or take down anything that breaks these terms, the content policy or the law, and may pause an account for 7 days, 30 days or until we lift it. We close accounts that keep breaking the rules.
- When we take something of yours down or pause your account, the app tells you why. You can complain about any decision to the grievance officer.
- We act on orders of Indian courts, and on lawful orders of authorised government officers, within the times the law sets. They are listed on the grievance page.
- We don't take a review down because an owner objects to it, or for money. It comes down when it breaks these terms, the content policy or the law.
- When something is taken down, we keep a copy of it, and the record of the account that posted it, for 180 days, as the IT Rules require.
Leaving rentedhere
- Settings → Delete my account. Your number and sign-in are erased at once, your listings and posts come down, and every device is signed out.
- Your published reviews stay on their homes' pages under your handle, because the next tenant relies on them. The handle was never your name.
- The account record (the handle, its dates and what it posted, without your number) is kept for at least 30 days, in case of a dispute about something it posted.
- You can edit a review of yours at any time. To have one taken down, write to the grievance officer.
Disclaimers and limits on our liability
- rentedhere is free and provided as it is. We work to keep it running and correct, but we don't promise it will always be available or free of errors, or that any listing, review, map position or distance is right.
- rentedhere is an intermediary under section 79 of the Information Technology Act, 2000: what users post is theirs, and we host it under the due-diligence rules the law sets for intermediaries.
- We aren't responsible for what users post, for deals or disputes between users, or for any loss from relying on a listing, a review or a message, except where the law makes us responsible.
- Where the law lets us limit it, our total liability to you for any claim about rentedhere is ₹1,000, and we aren't liable for indirect losses such as a lost deal or lost income.
- Nothing here limits a liability that Indian law doesn't allow to be limited, or takes away a right you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 or any other law that can't be signed away.
- If someone brings a claim against rentedhere because of something you posted in breach of these terms, you will cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it.
Law and courts
- These terms are governed by the laws of India.
- The courts at Bengaluru, Karnataka, have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute about rentedhere or these terms.
- Before going to court, write to the grievance officer; most problems end there. Complaints are acknowledged within 24 hours. If you disagree with the grievance officer's decision, you can appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee at gac.gov.in within 30 days.
