Plain answers about how this works
rentedhere keeps a record of what renting a home was like: the deposit, how long it took to come back, the owner, the water, the society. Tenants write it under a handle, and the next tenant reads it before paying a deposit.
What this is, and isn't
- A record of homes, written by the people who lived in them, in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Jaipur.
- A noticeboard: owners, PG operators and tenants post flats, beds and rooms, and people post what they're looking for.
- Not a broker. We don't arrange visits, check that a place is still available, hold money or take a fee. Deals are between you and the person who posted.
Privacy: what we keep and what we show
What we keep. Your phone number, twice: as a peppered hash, to find your account when you log in, and encrypted, to send you a login code. A four-character handle (like 4F2K) that we make for you. What you post. Documents you upload as proof (an agreement, a bill) go to private storage that only moderators can open. We never ask for your name.
What anyone can see. Your handle, your published reviews (on each home's page, and on your profile only if you switch that on), your live posts, the areas you've lived in, and how long you've been here. Owners appear as owner handles (like Owner M3), never by name.
Who sees your number. Nobody, unless you switch on “share my number” inside one conversation; then only that person. Public text can't carry phone numbers, emails or links; we refuse them.
Your location. When you allow it, we use your device's location once to pick your city and remember only the city, never the position.
Cookies. One keeps you logged in; another remembers the city you picked or your device found. No advertising trackers.
The full version, with every cookie, how long we keep things and your rights: the privacy policy.
How verification works
- Phone verified. Every account logs in with a code sent to a mobile number. That's the first level, and every review carries at least that.
- Tenancy verified. A tenant can add proof of the tenancy (the agreement or the rent trail). A moderator checks it; the document is never shown, and the review says “verified tenancy”.
- Owners. An owner's handle shows “not verified yet” until a moderator has checked a document in their name against the home. Claim your home.
Held reviews, disputes and corrections
- Reviews go up at once, unless our checks hold them: abuse, or mentioning caste or religion. A held review waits for a moderator.
- A tenant can choose to publish only after moving out, or only after the deposit comes back. Until then the review waits.
- Owners can reply to any review as their owner handle. A calm reply with the facts is the fastest correction.
- If a review is wrong on the facts, report it with what the record shows (a receipt, a message, the agreement). A moderator reads every report. A review that breaks the rules comes down; one disputed on the facts can carry a moderator's note.
- Comments, pings and answers follow the same checks.
Listings and posts
- Listings, PG beds, rooms and “looking” posts are free and stay up for 30 days. Renewing is free.
- Every listing sits on the home's own page, next to its record. A listing whose text our checks hold is paused until a moderator reads it.
- We don't verify availability or rents. Visit before you pay anything, and never pay a token amount to someone you haven't met.
Deleting your account
- Settings → Delete my account. Your number and sign-in are erased at once, your listings and posts come down, and every device is signed out.
- Your published reviews stay on their homes' pages under your handle, which was never your name, because the next tenant relies on them.
- The account record itself is kept for 30 days, in case of a dispute about something it posted.
Terms, in short
- Write what happened to you, in your own words. No abuse, no caste or religion, no names, numbers or addresses of people.
- You keep what you write; you let rentedhere show it on the site and in shared links.
- We can hold, mark or remove anything that breaks these rules, and close accounts that keep breaking them.
- Know your rights is common practice and the Model Tenancy Act as a benchmark, not legal advice.
The full rules are the terms of use and the content policy. Policy version 2026-10-24. Logging in records your agreement to this version; when the words change, the version changes and you are asked again at your next login.
